It’s that time of the year for many of us… the all consuming and terrifying job hunt!
School is done, or almost for many of you, and the savings and pocket money left over from the semester is fast dwindling! You know the summer is coming and there are concerts and movies, summer bashes and road trips waiting to be had!
If you’re anything like me, after semesters chockfull of work and stress, sitting around and doing nothing for more than a week is enough to drive me absolutely wacko! Keeping busy and working can be a relief after the crazy months you put into school. Once your shift is over, you can leave work there… unlike homework, which follows you everywhere. Not that job hunting is easy or relaxing, of course. There is the tidying up of the resume, applying in person, online and over the phone. If you’re struggling and not liking this phase of the summer off from school so far, you are in a boat with thousands of people having the same problem!
Do not despair!
There are simple enough ways to get used to job hunting. If you aren’t already familiar with doing it, get ready because you’ll be doing it every summer and come graduation from whatever you’re doing, be prepared for a massive search!
- YOUR RESUME: The first thing to do is look at your resume from all the angles. How is a prospective employer going to look at it?
- LEARN ABOUT THEM, FIND THEIR WEBSITE: If you’re looking for something specific, check out a company’s website, and see if you can tailor your resume to what they are looking for. It’s a great idea to have versions of your resumes, while keeping the same info of course. Different companies are going to be looking for different characteristics and you should highlight what you can do that fits their bill.
- BE PATIENT: Second thing is not to worry if it takes a week or more to hear from someone. It takes time to go over a resume and see if a candidate is right to call in for an interview, so don’t panic! And if you think it is taking a while, send a follow up e-mail expressing how you’d like to meet them in person or something along those lines: it guarantees they respond!
But most of all make sure you take your time, and look carefully at the job descriptions and expectations! Job-hunting isn’t easy; take it from someone who’s worked some very odd jobs here and there, it can work out pretty well. Check out the Go-Deep section of this blog for some great sites, especially Canadian ones!
