KAUST stands for King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in Saudi Arabia.
KAUST expects to officially open its doors in September 2009. And King Abullah of Saudi Arabia hopes to encourage Saudis to leave the world of religious fanaticism behind by encouraging his people to excel in the sciences, a sort of Saudi Enlightenment.
This is truly a wonderful forward-thinking plan, and it has the potential to turn the tide against militant fanatical Islamic factions, who are only able to sell their stories of white-grapes-and-virgins to under-educated and under-employed people who have no other path - in this life - to hope for glory and, perhaps even, for a livelihood...
The KAUST scholarship will pay full tuition for outstanding students anywhere in the world who are interested to pursue careers in science and engineering at the institution in which the student (until KAUST is opened in 2009) is enrolled, and upon graduation the student is expected to pursue advanced degrees at KAUST.
The intention is to fill KAUST with world-class scholars, and to turn the institution into a thriving center for the pursuit of knowledge in the modern sciences.
King Abullah is now in his 80s, and he has shown that he is indeed not an old ruler, but rather a wise one. Let us hope KAUST succeeds and accomplishes its mission!
LONG LIVE THE KING!
