Long Tail of Winter… by Rosann Santora Kao, Ph.D.
February is an odd time of year.
In olden days, what might be the daily occupation when the final harvest had long been gathered in and the many foods had been patiently stored? When inventories were completed and homes were well secured against the chilly winds, and only the animals needed some daily tending; what else was there to do?
In northern climes, February brings the romance of anticipation. The end of the cold is near. The ancient Asians captured the spirit of the long tail of winter and established a month-long holiday, now known as Chinese New Year.
Those imaginative peoples created home-based celebrations to keep the heart alive while waiting for the start of Planting-Season. To enjoy the Lunar New Year, or the Spring Festival, one must clean the home and decorate with bright red colors.
Rest.
Eat.
Be with your family. See your friends.
Settle your debts - financial and social.
Be generous with time and gifts for those you cherish.
And, reflect: when spring does arrive, where shall you plant your energies?
As students, the end of winter means it’s time to plan what the next seasons will bring. In the wish for warmer days, the mind will envision June, July and August activities — academic, vocational and other.
Information on summer study is widely available. But, how do students learn about summer jobs?
As for the “otherwise” of summer planning — what else would you like to know? What would be ideal ways to spend your Summer?
Share with us your thoughts as we walk out the long tail of winter.
