We’ve made a couple additions to the Silent Film Festival page recently. The biggies are the date-changes, and the new Charity Waiver form . Why? Because we’ve decided to effectively add an extra category to the contestants: teens who decide to create their video on behalf of a charity. Cue the drum rolls please.
iCUBED.us is about empowering and inspiring youth to be engaged global citizens. The Silent Film Festival is a perfect platform for youth to talk about a cause that’s important to them, and, potentially to be heard across Asia and the Middle East on Channel [V]. Not only is it an opportunity to gain valuable learning experience and international exposure doing something that’s both meaningful and creative, it’s also a way for the world to find out more about various charities in existence, and the issues that make their existence necessary.
We thus decided to waive registration fees for teens who create their films about registered non-profit organizations. All they need to do is get the registered charity to sign a Charity Waiver form, and submit it along with their registration form. The other rules still stand though: films must not contain dialogue, and must be one-minute in length.
In fact, we’ve inserted our own little shout-out to one of our favourite social enterprises in this year’s contest. Some of you have asked about film topic number 2: Yak Cheese. Yes, we’re a little odd like that.
Yes, I’m embarrassed to admit it prompted random spontaneous giggles in the iCUBED HQ for a while. And yes, it is a vague reference to our Web Cam. But most of all, it’s a nod to Ventures in Development, a non-profit dedicated to helping impoverished nomadic communities in Western China earn incremental income off an abundant resource there – yaks. Hence was born Cheese for Change and “Yak-shmere”, well actually the org is Ventures in Development, and the Wooly things are under the brandname SHOKAY. If you’re curious to know more about Yak Cheese, check out their website. (In October, we will feature a Look Behind the Scenes interview with the co-founder of V.I.D., Ms. Marie So.)
So there it is. Are you a teen volunteering for a charity?
This is a fun way for you to spread the word on their behalf.
Do you work for a charity with teen volunteers?
Let them know about the competition; our fees are waived 100% for them. And we get to learn a whole lot more about charities around the world.
Talk about a win-win-win situation.
