Ever wanted to watch a film and dictate how it literally unfolds?
Are you tired of conventional linear story telling?
Then GPS Film is the new form of entertainment for you! GPS systems have moved on from simply getting from A to B!
With GPS Film, simply walking down the street with your GPS enabled PDA or mobile phone and turning right or left can alter the course of the film you are watching! If you are riding in a taxi and take an unexpected turn then so does the story! Your movements dictate all the twists and turns in the plot.
Scott Hessels and his team based at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore have enhanced GPS usage and revolutionized conventional entertainment forever. GPS Film is a new media artwork that is a way of watching a movie based on location. This is done via an open source application that runs on a GPS enabled PDA or mobile phone. Fact, fiction and reality all blend into one.
Nine Lives – The First GPS FILM
The film “Nine lives,”a comedy chase film about mistaken identity set around nine Singapore neighborhoods and directed by Kenny Tan is the first film to use this technology. Here, interactive story telling becomes an experimental experience as the viewer dictates how the film unfolds as he or she travels around via foot and transportation. The streets of Singapore are the canvas of the film and come to life with the person’s movements.
The setting of the film can also be the location where the viewer can watch the film. As the viewer enters and explores certain parts of a city like parks, neighborhoods, etc., his/her GPS system reveals the location and plays scenes tied to the place itself. Viewers edit their stories according to their own movements so the story constantly changes.
Via GPS film, storytelling can now be personalized and localized. For more on the brains behind GPS Film, Scott Hessels - a distinguished judge for iCUBED.us's first annual SILENT FILM CONTEST - check out our "CAREERStripleTALK" interview with him.
