Which KIWI is your pick for the *NEW* easter bunny?
Environment Canterbury - a New Zealand environmental agency - is protesting the rabbit as a symbol of Easter due to the species’ rate of reproduction.
The non-native rodent is the country’s most damaging natural pest. Since their introduction in the late 19th century, the rabbit has infested much of the country, depleting vegetation and quickening the effects of erosion. Despite many attempts to curb their growth, such as poison or hunting efforts, they still remain on the Most Wanted list.
Instead, the agency is pushing the endangered Kiwi bird as a more appropriate symbol of Easter, not only because the chicken-sized, flightless bird is New Zealand’s national bird, but also because it actually lays eggs.
