Physical Fitness is a Necessary Part of Education says DaisyC-18

Should Physical Education be made compulsory in Public Exams and what are the benefits?

Personally I support the proposal of making Physical Education a compulsory subject in public exams because I do think teenagers focus too much on studies only. Receiving Physical Education is definitely useful for youth to pay more attention to overall health and fitness - both physically and mentally.

If Physical Education is made compulsory in public exams, students will be more motivation to participate in PE lessons. Many students dislike exercising, thus they don't build up good habits. During PE lessons, teachers always ask students to do different types of training and play different sports. For example, we stretch to release stiffness and to strengthen our biceps and triceps. Thus, if it is mandatory for our public exams, students will make less excuses to avoid doing exercise as they would want good exam results.

During PE lessons, we play a lot of sports to help us maintain our health. There are several ways in which sports can benefit our physical health.

First, playing sports can increase the rate of metabolism so that waste products in our bodies such as carbon dioxide can be pass out more quickly.

Second, playing sports help reshape our figures and muscles are trained to become stronger. We can develop better posture. As a result, students can see a big improvement in their fitness level and body shape and thus become more confident. So I believe if the proposal above is carried out with parents’ support, it will absolutely encourage the students to do more exercise.

What’s more, if Physical Education is taken into account as a compulsory subject in the public exams, students not only need to do exercise and play sports, we students also need to do research, projects or presentations and so on. We will have a lot of opportunities to work in teams and collaborate with each other.

Interpersonal skills, presentation skills are improved and these skills help in future careers. We are not only required to know the benefits of regular exercise, but also we get a deeper understanding of our own bodies and of the importance of playing sports. Thus, Physical Education is a very tangible and practical subject and the knowledge can be applied to our daily lives.

Students can make use of the things in PE lessons to stay healthy. So it is important to ask students to take Physical Education classes seriously.

Last but not least, Physical Education and sports inspire individual endurance and it teaches us the importance of sportsmanship.

In playing a game during PE lessons, we are taught to demonstrate respect for teammates and opponents. It helps us to learn “how to win with humility and to lose with grace; how to set a goal and fulfill it.” (Tony Blair, 2008)

What’s more, sports can bring people together and create a sense of unity among the team, the schools and the society. Teens in Hong Kong will likely build up a sense of self-worth and self-belief as a result of taking Physical Education classes seriously.

All in all, making Physical Education compulsory brings more benefits than harm so, I believe, the proposal should be introduced. It’s because PE plays a significant role in our society as it liberates potential ─ not just physically but psychologically too.

Why don’t we promote PE lessons to all students? Now is the time for sports to show how much it can achieve beyond sports!
