EARTH HOUR 2009! – YOUR LIGHT SWITCH IS YOUR VOTE!

‘VOTE EARTH - YOUR LIGHT SWITCH IS YOUR VOTE!’

by Nomadic Chris, 10 March 2009

Ever wondered what your city or Hong Kong at night would look like if a majority of the lights went off? Well on March 28th, from 8.30pm to 9.30pm (local time), you get the chance to know!

With the world’s population growing and natural resources shrinking, can the average person make a difference in terms of preserving the health of the planet for future generations?

With Earth Hour 2009, the answer now is yes!

With many common divisions amongst people, one thing does unite us all, the environment! Earth Hour 2009 will be one chance for the world to join up for a common cause. 681 cities in 76 countries have already signed up!

What is Earth Hour?

Earth Hour is a global World Wide Fund for Nature climate change initiative. On March 28th 2009 from 8.30pm – 9.30pm (locally), individuals, businesses and governments globally will turn out their lights for one hour to show their support for action on climate change.

Earth Hour 2009 aims to reach an amazing 1 billion people in 1,000 cities!

Why partake in Earth Hour 2009?

Currently, effects of climate change caused by carbon emissions pose the greatest threat to life on Earth. Only by changing the world’s collective attitude towards the use of carbon-emitting energy sources can we alleviate this threat.

Participating in Earth Hour is a contribution to a united global message to individuals, businesses, politicians and governments around the world that climate change affects and is the responsibility of the global community!

This year, Earth Hour has been transformed into the world’s first global election, between Earth and global warming.

For the first time in history, people of all ages, nationalities, race and background have the opportunity to use their light switch as their vote – Switching off your lights is a vote for Earth, or leaving them on is a vote for global warming!

Some cities are taking further action to promote Earth Hour 2009:

  • Sydney Ferries, which has been an enthusiastic supporter of Earth Hour since 2007, will this year be sounding the horns of all its ferries operating on Sydney Harbor, heralding Earth Hour in the city where the campaign first began.

  • Global landmarks such as Sydney Opera House (Sydney), CN Tower and Burj Dubai (Dubai), the world’s tallest building and many more will also join in as well!

  • In the United States the National Education Association, representing 3.2 million teachers and education professionals, has also pledged its support for Earth Hour, as has the 1.4 million-strong American Federation of Teachers.

WWF are urging the world to VOTE EARTH and reach the target of 1 billion votes, which will be presented to world leaders at the Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen 2009
It’s your planet and soon to be your children’s planet. Act now before it is too late!
