SUPER STAR SPORTS STORIES: Eddie the Eagle & Dan Jansen
By Nomadic Chris, 5 May 2009
Eddie the Eagle – The Eagle has landed (last!)
He soared, he leapt and he landed. He also finished last. Eddie ‘the eagle’ Edwards became a crowd favorite and is still one of the UK’s most beloved athletes for his glorious failures at the 1988 Winter Olympics.
Dan Jansen – The reward will come eventually
Inspired by his sister to become a speed skater, Dan Jansen was the hot favorite to win gold at both the 500m and 1000m distances at the 1988 Calgary Olympics. Just before his races, he received a phone call to inform him his sister was dying of leukemia. She died the next day. He decided to race but fell in both races. At the 1992 Olympics, he also finished without medals. His last chance was at the 1994 Winter Olympics. He finished 8th at 500m and entered his last Olympic race with his final chance of gold. He won his first and only Olympic gold medal of his career, setting a new world record in the process, dedicating his gold medal to his late sister. There was not a dry eye in the arena and around the world.
