SUPER STAR SPORTS STORIES: The Miracle Game & Eric the Eel
By Nomadic Chris, 7 May 2009

The Miracle Game – USA 1 England 0
In 1950, the US sent a team to the world cup in Brazil. Soccer at this point was just an immigrant and enthusiasts’ game which lagged far behind basketball, baseball and American football. The US team was full of amateurs and college players; one of their group games was against England. At this point in time, England had a thriving professional league and some of the world greatest players in Tom Finney and Stanley Mortensen. In the end, the 1-0 win for the United States sent shock waves around the world.

Eric the Eel!
Representing your country is one of the greatest feelings in the world, no matter how good or bad you are! Eric Moussambani was a swimmer from Equatorial Guinea. Moussambani won brief international fame at the 2000 Summer Olympics when he swam his heat of the 100 m freestyle in 1:52.72 and won, because the two other competitors disqualified for taking a false start! Urged on by the crowd, he pushed himself hard!

His time was more than twice that of his faster competitors, and outside even the 200 m world record. However he had set a new personal best and national record! Before the Olympics, he had never seen a full size pool and had just learnt to swim.
