Back to School: Style and Setting Impressions

Deciding what to wear on the first day of school is an ageless dilemma –faced by nearly every incoming student to middle school, high school, college, etc. Regardless of the specific level of fashion-consciousness possessed by each particular individual, deliberate thought is put into the decision of each first-day-of-school outfit.

For me, deciding what to wear to school was difficult enough in Ohio, but going to college in New York City has upped the ante in terms of setting impressions with personal style. In a city as diverse as New York, any given individual walking may be subjected to silent criticisms from myriad passersby.

But honestly, who really gives a crap what other people think? I dress the way I do for my own personal enjoyment. I take pleasure in the art of presentation –figuring out how I want people to view me for the day. I do what we all do. In the end, each of us desires to present ourselves in a specific way, demonstrating to the world our own style philosophy.

That being said, I should perhaps introduce to you my own brand of personal style before I begin my blogging escapades in the world of all-that-is-fashion-related. In general, I’m more inclined to identify with an “indie” sense of style as opposed to “preppy”. But, like most of us, I refuse to be categorized. In the end, what matters most to me is how I feel in a particular outfit. The following are some basic staples of my style:

Bold Colors: I’m a huge fan of the color red, and one of my favorite articles of clothing is a simple pair of Soffe shorts –which, unfortunately, were left at home when I moved into my college dorm. Combining solid, bold colors is a personal favorite style tactic. Currently, my two favorite color combinations are red/blue and red/turquoise.

The Black Tank Combo: When all else fails, and I have nothing better to wear, I revert to my black tank combo –which consists of wearing a plain black tank top over a t-shirt. Layering, layering, layering; I adore it, I admire it (when it is tastefully done), I live by it.

Black Tights/Leggings: Nothing spices up an outfit like a good pair of tights, and well, since black matches just about anything, when all else fails, I’ll throw on a pair of black tights.

Flats: I wear nothing else.

Stay tuned!
