This Thursday, 4th June 2009, Harvard University announced the newly endowed "F. O. Matthiessen Visiting Professorship of Gender and Sexuality" Chair which, due to the interdisciplinary nature of LGBT studies, will enable visiting scholars from across a broad range of academic disciplines to teach at the university for one semester per year.
In the heated debate over gay marriage that is slowly igniting across America - now with five states which have legalized gay marriage - this is a positive first step, and a welcome rational one, towards shining the clear-light-of-reason onto an unnecessarily and overly emotional debate over the right of grown men and women to legitimize their relationships. As with any other issue of debate we only stand to benefit from a rigorous investigation into all aspects of what the root and causes of differences in gender and sexuality mean, and what hidden implications or side effects might occur, and to have a plan to deal with them. Kudos to Harvard University and the "Harvard Gay and Lesbian Caucus" for this bold new step to put reason back into one very basic, outdated and irrational taboo.
