What actions does a person take when faced with unquestionable injustices and suffering?
What happens if the outside world only knows some of the facts?
The Devil came on Horseback” is a powerful documentary about the genocide in Darfur, Sudan as seen through the eyes of former U.S. Marine Captain Brian Steidle. Via the documentary, the Arab run government is shown to be systematically executing a plan to rid the area of its Black African citizens. Media coverage is sometimes inaccurate or misleading but Steidle was in a unique situation.
As a military advisor, Steidle had access to parts of the country that no journalist could penetrate. He witnessed and experienced some unimaginable horrors. Steidle’s weapon was his camera which he used to capture powerful images as evidence. As they say ‘a picture is worth a thousand words.’
His experiences spurred him into action but he was ultimately left frustrated by the inaction of the international community despite all his efforts to expose the injustices he saw. He left his post and returned to the United States to share his experiences in order for the world to know more and importantly, take action. Hollywood celebrities such as George Clooney have also spoken out on the situation.
This documentary is good for teens to learn about:
* The situation in Darfur, Sudan.
* Photo-journalism.
* Genocide and the causes of genocide.
* Advocacy and pressure groups
This is one of the most powerful documentaries I have seen. Harrowing yet essential viewing; highly recommended!
