Award winning documentary film: "NEW YEAR BABY", a review ... by Chris Lau
TAGLINE - "What does it take to heal?
How easy is it to confront the past and the ghosts of unimaginable horrors?
Does everyone truly know their own families secrets and history?
What are the many factors which make up a person’s identity?
The excellent documentary ‘New Year Baby’ by director Socheata Poeuv tells the emotional story of an Asian American family having the courage to return to their ‘home’ country of Cambodia to learn more about their secretive family history and horrors of the Khmer Rouge who ruled the nation from 1975–1979.
The then Marxist leader Pol Pot attempted to revolutionize Cambodia forcing millions of people from the cities to work on communal farms in the countryside. Their brutal methods saw the deaths of over 1 million people. Only when the Vietnamese army invaded, did the terror end.
After a huge family secret is revealed to the 'lucky one', Socheata Poeuv (who was born after the Khmer Rouge), viewers follow Socheata and her family as they visit Cambodia for the first time since they fled; we are given a window into their lives and the emotional journey to find out how Socheata parents came to meet and eventually flee to the United States.
Young viewers can learn about:
The fascinating country of Cambodia and its past and present.
The Khmer Rouge and their years of terror.
Forgiveness and the meaning of true love.
The concepts of identity, culture and social injustice.
Every family has a story, and viewers have been honored and privileged that Socheata has let them into her family’s life.
FOR THIS and all the reasons listed above, this film is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Not to mention, the clever use of animation.
