LIFE LESSONS – “The Road Less Travelled” – Alternative Paths in life! ...by Chris Lau

‘Two roads diverged in a yellow wood ... And I took the one less traveled by. And that has made all the difference’ – Robert Frost

Are there alternatives to the conventional university-education route?

YES there are! Wouldn’t it be boring if everyone thought the same thing, made the same choices, we’d be automatons if this were the case. Luckily, we still do have freedom of choice and freedom of speech – this is what makes us human.

Everyone is on a life journey but this doesn’t mean that everyone has to travel down the same path. Everyone is unique and has different skills / talents, and whilest university is a great experience but truth be told academics are not for everyone! Remember you are special! No one else is like you and can do what you can do!

You have many options in life! If you are not academically inclined it doesn't mean you are stupid! You probably have talents in other areas - creative, sporting or otherwise. Maybe you are eager or have difficult circumstances and want or need to work straight away! There is nothing wrong with this. In-fact there are advantages to working straight from high school.

  • On the Job Training! A lack of a college degree doesn’t have to restrict your career options. Many professionals start their careers in retail sales, customer service, or other positions that offer on-the-job training! There is no better way to learn than real life experience!

  • Real Life versus Theory! Few college experiences can match the demands of a regular full-time job!

  • Workplace Buzz! Sometimes sitting in a cramped classroom listening to theory is plain tedious! Some people are just inspired and thrive in different environments!

A popular way to learn a new trade AND get paid is the apprenticeship route!

  • Participants can learn while they earn money according to a progressive pay scale that automatically increases as their skills increase.

  • Provides a blending of theory with practical learning.

  • Learning while on the job can motivate individuals who may not do well in the traditional classroom setting.

  • Training and jobs are brought closer together.

  • It helps to assure that up-to-date equipment and techniques are used in training.

  • By design, apprentices train for an entire industry, rather than for an individual employer.

  • It offers a foundation for lifelong learning!

Apprenticeships are ultimately a rewarding experience, and luckily you will not have to face this guy on a day to day basis.
