Film Review: “Son of Rambow” – The 1980’s in a Nutshell

by Nomadic Chris, 30 June 2009

The British Independent gem “Son of Rambow” is a throwback to a more innocent time.

A time where mobile phones, emails, SMS's and the internet were light years away!

A time when a child could play on the streets without a care in the world and let their imaginations run free.

The period in question, the 1980's! More specifically for this film, 1980’s England.

This drama comedy directed by Garth Jennings tells the tale of two quirky lonely boys, quiet and naïve Will (Bill Milner) and street wise Lee (Will Poulter), coming of age and discovering the true meaning of friendship.

After meeting, Lee takes the blame for one of Will’s mistakes at school and their relationship develops. The main binding item to tie the boys together!

Rambo: First Blood!

Opposites attract but what they both share is: A creative and wild imagination!

Lee enlists Will to help him make a shot for shot remake of the 1980’s classic starring eighties demi-god Sylvester Stallone. As the film progresses, the plot reveals the different problems the two boys are going through. Lee deals with not having his parents around and a bullying older brother while Will comes from an ultra strict religious family (Television is banned amongst other things).

When French exchange students arrive at their school, their friendship is severely tested just as their Rambo remake starts flourishing. More of a drama than a comedy, ‘Son of Rambow’ touches upon issues such as:

  • Loneliness
  • Identity
  • True Friendship
  • Parental Separation
  • A 1980’s childhood
  • Creativity and Imagination

A sweet, underplayed and touching film with unique characters, "Son of Rambow" shows that engaging characters and good story telling makes up for CGI and mindless violence. Highly recommended and a good family film to watch together.
