If you're looking for something to read, check out our Careers, Role Models/Profiles and Interviews where you will find many professions featured, learn about what it takes to succeed, and ask yourself, is this job for me? It's about what you enjoy doing, work can be fulfilling if you choose the right sort of work.
Should work just be about the money? Doesn't aptitude and affinity matter? After all, how much time do we spend at work in our daily lives? Doesn't it seem wise to work at something you enjoy? So think about it, what do you enjoy doing and why?
For the first in this series:
On Being a University Professor
...excerpt...
i3: Using the knowledge and experience that you’ve gained in your years of teaching and in your travels and studies, can you share with our youthful readership some insights into possible careers in both academics and - if it exists - as a modern day career philosopher. What would predisposition someone to succeed in either of these types of endeavors?
AC: I think the true academic must love solitude most of the time, but also be able to deliver theatrical performances in the classroom a few times a week. Of course, most of us are not like that! So if you don’t like spending lots of time alone reading, writing and doing other academic tasks, this might not be the life for you. And it is a life, not just a job. You can never leave your work behind; it is always with you as you try to work out the ideas you are going to write about.
