Life Lessons: Mentors and Words to Inspire! ... by Chris Lau

‘Mentoring is a brain to pick, an ear to listen, and a push in the right direction’ - John Crosby

Graduated and still don't know what to do?

Fortunately, this is a dilemma faced by millions of graduates, so you are not alone. In these times of uncertainty, most will be looking for words of wisdom and inspiration from mentors who have navigated the ups and downs of life to become successful in life, be it financially, with regards to career, or in relationships. Success can be defined in so many ways!

Mentors exist in all shapes and sizes and they can be the people you least expect them to be! From your school counselor to your new boss to people whom you have been just introduced to!

You may think you know it all but your own knowledge is sometimes a mere drop in the ocean! A good mentor would:

  • BE WILLING TO SHARE SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERTISE!
A good mentor is willing to teach what he / she knows and accepts the mentee where they currently are in their professional development or life stage. Everyone starts somewhere in life so a good mentor would pass on knowledge that was passed down to them!

  • DEMONSTRATES A POSITIVE ATTITUDE AND ACTS AS A POSITIVE ROLE MODEL
A good mentor exhibits the personal attributes it takes to be successful in their field. Different careers need different characteristics and skills and a good mentor would show you the ropes!

  • SHARES LIFE EXPERIENCES!
Life is not always a smooth path and getting advice from someone older who has overcome hurdles in life can always inspire you and give you greater courage.

  • TAKES A PERSONAL INTEREST IN YOU!
A good mentor will not look at you as just an employee or student. They will look at you as a person. They feel invested in the success of the mentee as they know that your success or failure in work and life can be strongly influenced by them! This in itself is a great responsibility!

  • LOVES THEIR WORK!
If your mentor does not like their job then why should you?

  • VALUES ON-GOING GROWTH AND LEARNING!
A good mentor will always be learning and growing as a person and hopefully this love of learning will be passed onto you.

  • PROVIDES GUIDANCE AND POSITIVE FEEDBACK
One of the key responsibilities of a good mentor is to provide guidance and constructive feedback to their mentee. A good mentor will provide good advice and highlight your strengths and weaknesses for your benefit.

  • SETS AND MEETS ON-GOING PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL GOALS
A good mentor continually sets a good example by achieving goals and showing you the processes involved.

  • VALUES THE OPINION OF OTHERS AND FEEDBACK!
As no one is perfect, your mentor will also be learning on the job and valuing feedback from others including maybe yourself!

A good way to get your career (and life!) on track is to find a good mentor! A person who truly cares for your career needs and who also cares for you as a person! They are rare indeed but when you meet the right person, you will know!
