Text Talk - Do You? Or Should You?

Mobile phone.

My teacher asked us. Is it a NEED or a WANT?

Well today we can certainly call mobile phone a NEED. I mean who the hell does not have a mobile phone? We need it for calling people. We need it for sending SMS. We need it for boring times. We need it for music time. We need it for 'Kodak moments'. How many hold-upers, snatchers and illegal sellers got rich from the said device? Well, I don't really care and I'm not here to talk about this. I'll be writing about THE TEXT TALK MOVEMENT (TTTM).

Text talk is fast. It is fun. It saves time. But I think it doesn't help because it degrades our spelling and grammar skills.

Among the said topic are the the anti-vwls mvmnt, the iNcOrReCt CaPiTaLiZaTiOn MoVeMeNt (this can be very annoying sometimes) of words, the unnecessary 'H's (and other extra letters) mowvementh (e.i. po = poh), the purpozely taypingz off encorrect ispelling moovement (i.e. Hi = hy), the supr short wrds (e.i. hi hw r u?).

I have formulated some theories on why people continue and enjoy using TTTM.
1. People are trying to shorten their message.
2. They are just really really really LAZY.
3. Time is of the essence.
4. They just want to send the 'MAIN IDEA'
5. The recipient is NOT an English teacher.

I pity those who use alibi to abuse correct spelling and grammar. I pity them for studying and yet not learning. I pity them for their plain stupidity.

Well, I can't blame them for that. Since prices are shooting up like crazy, one must save their prepaid/postpaid credits. And they also need to save time and energy (by typing on the keypad.)

As for me, I don't support TTTM since I'm a Sun [(S-uper U-seless N-etwork) a telecommunications provider here in the Philippines] subscriber and I can text all I want. I make sure that I send text messages with correct spelling and grammar and I take a lot of time typing text messages.

methinks it is 'A WANT', not 'a need'

Just because everyone has a mobile phone doesn't make it a NEED! :)

Some days, I almost yearn for the days when phones were connected to a wall, and there are times when you are just not available. Mind you, the convenience of mobile phones, emails, etc are not something I don't appreciate fully! BUT. All this technology is just incredibly INVASIVE also.

Is the world a better place because we all have mobile phones?
I think the verdict is still out on this question - it's not the technology that makes our values, but rather, it's our values that lead us to use technology in a way that benefits humanity as a whole. And there's a need for us to align our values to 'the highest good' - HERE"s THE REAL "NEED"! Mobile phones can only ever be 'a want'.

Yes!

Indeed! Now the situation has become from 'we use technology' to 'technology uses us.'

Sad but true! It's 3am and I'm still up! =S
