For the first time in Hong Kong, we are joining major cities around the world and opting to walk instead of ignite our automobiles! Leading the charge? Members of our very own Government, some of whom are provided with chauffeured cars, today they will either walk or take public transport to work.
WORLD CARFREE DAY has been celebrated for many years around the world, but here in Hong Kong, this is a very special acknowledgment in a city that is not the easiest of pedestrian cities with the frequent hills and inclines. In other cities with a longer history of participation, there are timed solidarity walks for supporters to meet, and in many cases, there's some free food for those who participate.
Hong Kong is promoting World Carfree Day in the hopes that this type of citizen activism leads to creative people, like urban planners, to come up with innovative, long-term solutions.
There truly is a day for EVERYTHING!
And we hope those meetings between supporters of CARFREE DAY will continue to care about contributing to bettering our environment, perhaps some will come up with ideas and solutions, and then we hope they will find ways to let those 'in-charge' know.
The question to answer - for now - is, how realistic is it to expect a world without cars?
Comment below about your thoughts and include any events and outcomes to do with World Carfree Day.
