We've said it before. Every cause has its own day of celebration, so WHY NOT our furry friends in the animal kingdom?
Why shouldn't animals have a special day where the spotlight falls solely on them?
THEY DO! Every October 4th is World Animal Day!
From big cuddly pandas to your pet hamster, October 4th is the day that animals receive mankind’s special care and attention. Such is modern day life; the welfare of animals and their needs have mostly been overlooked.
Animals are:
- Exploited in the food industry
- Losing their natural habitats
- Locked in up horrific conditions in some zoos
- Hunted for sport
- Experimented on for research purposes
- Dealing with the consequences of climate change
- Many species are near extinction due to the culmination of the factors above
October 4th is the day that humanity literally lends their voice to animals! The love of animals, any animal, can cross any socio-economic, racial and religious divide. Different beliefs even have animals as their figureheads. Anyway, who wouldn't want to save the cute as a button Koala!? Not to mention the proven health benefits that caring for a dog has on the elderly, for companionship as well as the need to exercise with each other daily...
SOME HISTORICAL NOTES:
World Animal Day began in 1931 at a convention of ecologists in Italy to showcase the perils and dangers that animals faced. Why October 4th? The origins of day date back to the Feast Day of St Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals.
According to worldanimalday.org.uk , the main four goals of World Animal day are:
- To celebrate animal life in all its forms
- To celebrate humankind’s relationship with the animal kingdom
- To acknowledge the diverse roles that animals play in our lives – from being our companions, supporting and helping us,
to bringing a sense of wonder into our lives
- To acknowledge and be thankful for the way in which animals enrich our lives
Globally, animal themed organizations such as charities and Zoos are organizing events to celebrate all creatures great and small!
Check your local listings or go to the World Animal Day Website below for more!
If there are no alternative options, on October 4th; just be extra nice to an animal!
Humans share this planet, and for all our power in the animal kingdom, we have a responsibility to care for our animal friends.
COMMENT BELOW: Do you agree? Or, do you feel the animals are here merely to 'serve' human needs?
