Today is the 140th anniversary of the birth of Mahatma Gandhi, and it is a day that has been nominated to be the International Day of Nonviolence. Today, a group of Pacifists are initiating the World March for Peace and Nonviolence. The World March for Peace and Nonviolence is also a call for nuclear disarmament.

Following on the heels of the United Nation's DAY OF PEACE which is celebrated on 21st September (this year, it's 27th anniversary), this WORLD MARCH is instead a three-month long march for this list of objectives (from the WORLD MARCH website):

  • nuclear disarmament at a global level
  • the immediate withdrawal of invading troops from occupied territories
  • the progressive and proportional reduction of conventional weapons
  • the signing of non-aggression treaties between countries
  • the renunciation by governments of the use of war as a means to resolve conflicts"

Again from the WORLD MARCH website:
"This world march, called by some the greatest ever demonstration for Peace and Nonviolence, will pass through more than 100 countries on 5 continents, something that has never before occurred in history and will conclude on the 2nd of January, 2010 in the Park of Study and Reflection in Punta de Vacas at the foot of Mount Aconcagua, the roof of the West.

We aspire that, in the same way the sun dawns on the new day for the planet here, a new day starts for all of humanity, with a world without nuclear weapons and without wars."

    sounds easier than it is

and, even without conventional and nuclear weapons, we've still got to contend with 'natural disasters' which have become a sort of 'weapon against humanity' in this day and age!

Asia is reeling from the devastation from floods and earthquakes, just this month past, four countries have been sustained severe damage and loss of property and life...
