Is the Jane Goodall Institute Hong Kong (JGI HK) nothing but monkey business?
Given that Hong Kong barely has any monkeys in their natural environment, the focus of JGI HK is more focused on the environment and educating the younger generations on Green issues.
The Jane Goodall Institute (Hong Kong) was established in 1999. The Roots & Shoots environmental and humanitarian education program was launched in Hong Kong in 2001 to empower youth to engage in their community to learn about and solve problems affecting humans, animals and the environment.
Through the Chimp Guardian program, people in Hong Kong can do their part in saving critically endangered wild chimpanzees from extinction by sponsoring the care of an orphan chimpanzee at one of the Jane Goodall Institute's chimpanzee sanctuaries in Africa.
The Objectives of the Institute are:
- Increase awareness of and compassion for the plight of endangered animals, with a focus on chimpanzees.
- Foster public understanding of the interconnected nature of the human, animal and ecological community.
- Increase support for habitat and species conservation, particularly for wild chimpanzees.
- Promote activities that ensure the well-being of wild and captive chimpanzees.
- Provide training in and support for environmental and humanitarian education and action.
- Inspire and engage people to take action in local and global environmental and humanitarian initiatives.
JGI HK organizes many school visits and special events which involve local youths. For more on JGI HK, please follow on and read our exclusive interview with HK Program Manager, Ms. Corinne Kassay.
The Jane Good Institute World Wide
Founded in 1977, the Jane Goodall Institute continues Dr. Goodall’s pioneering research of chimpanzee behavior—research that transformed scientific perceptions of the relationship between humans and animals. Today, the Institute is a global leader in the effort to protect chimpanzees and their habitats. It also is widely recognized for establishing innovative community-centered conservation and development programs in Africa, and the Roots & Shoots education program, which has groups in almost 100 countries. About Roots & Shoots
Founded in 1991 by Dr. Jane Goodall and a group of Tanzanian students, the Roots & Shoots program is about making positive change happen—for our communities, for animals and for the environment. With tens of thousands of young people in almost 100 countries, the Roots & Shoots network connects youth of all ages who share a desire to create a better world. Young people identify problems in their communities and take action. Through service projects, youth-led campaigns and an interactive website, Roots & Shoots members are making a difference across the globe.
