"Sex-Texting" is the latest talking point for parents / teenagers / teachers; one simple text message, sometimes sent as a joke, can lead to devastating repercussions for naïve or reckless teens.
Mobile phones, once simply to make / receive calls. Technology has since developed and now a private picture sent by text can set off a chain of events which can lead to tragedy.
WHAT EXACTLY IS SEX-TEXTING? (Source: www.tech.in)
Sex-Texting is the sending of sexually provocative or nude photos via a mobile phone. Most modern day mobile phones now have a camera function and the ability to send stored photos via text messaging, with the push of a button.
According to a SexTech Summary, a survey of 1,280 teens and young adults by The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy in collaboration with CosmoGirl.com, 71% of teen girls and 67% of teen guys who have sent or posted sexually suggestive content say they have sent this content to a boyfriend or girlfriend. The figures are high for both sexes.
Sex-texting can also include sending sexual explicit content through social networks like Facebook, MySpace and other teen based websites. These websites can be exploited for the wrong reasons.
Sex-texting can be naively done to impress a boy / girl. Naïve, because the person receiving it might forward it onto other parties; thus humiliating the original sender. Sadly, some people use Sex-Text to get revenge against someone after a breakup.
REMEMBER THIS: Technology has advanced and our privacy is never guaranteed anymore!
You can eventually delete a phone text but some items on the internet; never truly go away. Even if you think you have deleted something, it can be retrieved; even mobile phone records can be accessed. Please think before you send anything, it may have repercussions beyond your control.
Legal Consequences:
Sex-texting is now illegal in many countries. The action of taking a picture of yourself naked self and sending it to someone might even be deemed "child pornography" depending on your age, and sending that photo would make you guilty of possession and spread of child pornography.
Also, if a teen is caught Sex-texting or participates in forwarding these pictures or videos, they may have a criminal record for life.
Both aforementioned instances are deemed child pornography.
SO, ask yourself: Is it worth tarnishing your name and future prospects?
Privacy Consequences:
Privacy is NOT guaranteed!
Whatever you send could potentially be shown around because the internet itself is never truly private! Think before you send or post anything of a dubious or compromising nature.
Remember as easy as it was for you to press “Send”; someone else can easily press “Forward!” and so on and so forth.
Future Consequences:
Given the ease of Sex-texting, a dubious picture can eventually reach your family, future employer(s) and colleges / universities so impacting your future life and relationships.
Bullying:
In some cases, teens send pictures to people whom they want to impress. These pictures get forwarded to others, and the girl / boy in question is then bullied in cyberspace and in real life. Added with embarrassment, it is a vicious circle to break from. Extreme cases have resulted in suicide.
Emotional Effect:
The humiliation / embarrassment a person feels when they find out their picture has been shared with strangers and worse, loved ones is damaging and can leave a person scarred for life.
If you receive a Sex-text, remember the repercussions of forwarding it! Speak to an adult you trust. Also, if you want to build a decent relationship with someone then sending a provocative picture is definitely not the best way to get their attention!
Think before you text or email! Your future may depend on it.
