INTRODUCING: "HUMANITY IN FOCUS" a Youth-led Hong Kong NGO (with Part 1 & 2 of our exclusive interview) ... by Chris Lau

Motto – “By the youth, through the youth, to the youth”

Can the youths of today make a significant difference?

Is youthful idealism dead? Are the younger generations apathetic to the world around them?

A "Yes" to the first question, and two resounding "No’s" to the latter!

Humanity in Focus (HIF), the Hong Kong based non-governmental organization (NGO), is proof that determination, hard work, and most importantly - compassion/empathy - can have a lasting impact on the lives of disadvantaged people in the global community. All HIF members hope to inspire others that "Yes!" an individual or a collective effort, CAN and DOES make a difference in the world, and "No!" not all youths are blinkered in their outlook.

HIF was initially set up by a group of university students after a service project trip to Cambodia in the summer of 2006. Driven by enthusiasm and the belief that those born with opportunities in life should assist those less fortunate to achieve their potential, HIF has grown into a full-fledged registered charity. The HIF mission can be summed up as follows:

BY THE YOUTH – Moved by the plight of their peers in Cambodia, HIF seeks to break the cycle of poverty by sharing with others their awareness on global issues, and by assisting children and teens in impoverished countries.

THROUGH THE YOUTH – At HIF, empowerment is encouraged and part of the organizational culture; a majority of the activities including the overseas projects in Cambodia are led by young people. Adults do act as advisors but the members are the energetic driving force. The aim is to encourage youths to participate in overseas voluntary services and enhance interaction among youth globally.

TO THE YOUTH – HIF also seek to share expertise, resources and care from the developed world with youth from all corners of the world where the bare necessities of life are lacking. HIF also empowers the youth they come into contact with via education and provision of basic life and work skills.

To achieve this, HIF mainly focuses on: Curriculum development, infrastructure construction (water tanks, small schools), language training, gender issues (HIV prevention, domestic violence) and youth empowerment projects such as technical training areas and services for street children.

MEDIA, ADVOCACY AND CAMBOWALK!
HIF enjoy sharing and advocating about their first-hand experiences! HIF members have given presentations to their fellow university students and at high schools throughout Hong Kong. HIF members have appeared in the local media and have even been on RTHK discussing their experiences. HIF have innovative means of generating funds and promoting their work! Ideas include CAMBOWALK on November 14th 2009, where participants will have the chance to make their own pair of paper slippers as they walk a certain distance to gain empathy with those without the most basic necessities such as shoes.

The youths and dreamers of today are the leaders and change agents of tomorrow"; HIF are a living testament to this belief!
