On 19th November, WORLD TOILET DAY, people on every continent - young and older - squatted for a minute in public to build awareness for the estimated 2.5 million nameless poor and destitute, in developing nations who die from diseases resulting from a lack of proper sanitation.
iCUBED.us reported on the "movement" and we'd hoped students & teens would join in THE BIG SQUAT last Thursday...
today, we're bringing our readers the results of this grassroots "movement", CHECK OUT THE LINK BELOW as well as an important message from the UNHCR about a little thought of service they provide to refugees.
To PREVENT bacterial diseases like Cholera (deadly, but easily preventable with proper sanitation) and Diarrhea (especially deadly to babies), the UNHCR builds 10 - 15,000 latrines (which are toilets with walls). And, PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE. According UNHCR, one latrine is needed per fifty people! and THAT puts the total number of latrines in refugee camps at between 80 to 100,000 latrines ... and, UNHCR is tasked with 'renovating' 10 to 15% annually ~ that's 10-15,000 toilets/latrines a year!!!
We'd never thought about the latrine needs of displaced persons - obvious as they would be! Have you?
