This Christmas, how can you help the less fortunate in society?
How far can your money go towards helping the refugees of the world?
Very soon Christmas will be upon us with decorations, lights and a festive atmosphere all here to remind us of this special time of year. Though, as people enjoy themselves with family and friends, we must remember that there are millions of refugee children and families globally struggling to live day to day in tough conditions.
HOW YOU CAN HELP IN YOUR OWN LITTLE WAY?
Via UNHCR HK (or your local charity), you can help change lives! YOU can choose a meaningful and vital gift which can benefit the world’s forgotten children and their families who find themselves far from home this Christmas.
By selecting a gift from UNHCR's on-line Star Appeal (Click link below), you can help provide essential assistance to the world's refugees who are often forgotten by the rest of the world.
For example, by spending just HK$300, you can provide textbooks, exercise books and pencils for 5 students for a year. By selecting warm blankets or an all season tent, you'll be contributing to UNHCR emergency relief projects. And by selecting a community well you will be contributing to UNHCR water projects for clean, safe drinking water.
WHY GIVE?
According to the www.centerforgiving.org 2000 Cone/Roper Raising Charitable Children Survey:
92 percent of American adults believe that encouraging children to participate in charities helps them to grow up to be better citizens.
96 percent of Americans believe that parents' charitable giving and volunteering is a good way to teach children about helping others.
There are many good reasons to give to those less fortunate than yourselves!
Habit! The simple act of giving can be a good habit which can be carried from youth to adulthood. Your actions can inspire others to do the same! As you get older, you can contribute using your skills and knowledge, not just financially!
Education and Experience! If you are passionate about social justice and charity work then you may even consider it as a career! Via donations and volunteering your time, you can learn about about the inside-outs of NGO’ and charities and gain further experience.
Empathy! The more involved you are with charity work, the greater the sense of empathy you will have with those less fortunate than yourself. This will broaden your horizons. If you are really passionate about a cause then you can literally place your heart into it!
Family and Community! Giving can be a family affair! Adults should assume the position of role models for youths. Adults can teach youths about the diverse scope of NGOs which exist, opportunities to volunteer, share stories of kindness and show how simply giving can impact and empower others for the better.
Ease! Giving and volunteering is easy! It can be as simple as collecting old items such as clothes, toys and books and delivering them to a charity drop off point! Your ‘old’ items can be seen as wonderful gifts for others! Online donations are now safer and accountable!
The Feel Good Factor! Yes, giving is good for your soul and has many health benefits! It can ease stress and knowing you have changed a life for the better is a feeling which cannnot be described.
So give! The UNHCR Hong Kong STAR APPEAL FORM IS BELOW! If you are not in Hong Kong, then, please contact your local charities and help out in any way you can.
And in this case …… WHEN YOU GIVE, YOU RECEIVE!
