“Spreading the Joy” – How to tell a Good Joke! ... by Christopher KL Lau

“All these jokes have been pre-approved as funny by me” - Mitch Hedberg

How can a person tell a decent joke? What makes a person a decent stand up comic or even the next Chris Rock?

Will your joke be met with an uncomfortable stonewall silence or with the audience rolling around in giggles?

Russell Peters, Margaret Cho? Conan O’Brien? Yes, they are all witty intelligent people but can comedy also be learned? The answer is yes!

All around the world, people brave crowds of strangers with one main goal; to make them laugh! Yes, a good and well thought out joke can make or break a stand up comic’s career. BUT just how does a person go about telling a decent joke?

According to www.about.com, there are a whole variety of tricks of the trade which can be crafted to make you, yes YOU into a potential comic legend!

Share your own Experiences! Be original and inventive! All those little things in life which you dismiss as irrelevant and annoying could just be comedy gold! You checked out the weather forecast and it said sunny and then torrential rain came and you had no umbrella?! There is a joke in there somewhere and hey, this situation probably happened to someone else as well! Share it! Empathy is a powerful emotion!

Comment on the Human Condition! Modern living can be hectic and everyday life can throw everyone the same type of curve balls and mishaps! What is the best way to get something off your chest? Make a joke about it of course!

Practice! Practice! Practice! Yes, practice makes perfect! Get to know your jokes inside out so that they come naturally to you. To gauge if they are truly funny, run them by some trusted associates so that they can feedback to you and you can refine them! All successful performers start somewhere and you may have to perform in front of crowds of 5 people at first. Well, in this environment, at least you can truly refine your jokes and see if they work!

Know your Audience! Want to tell a joke about Tiger Woods to corporate executives at Nike HQ?! That probably would not be too popular. Gauge your audience and figure out what types of jokes are suitable!

A Strong Punch Line! Your monologue should lay the ground work for an incredible punch line which will leave the crowd wanting more. Think carefully on how to build up to a great conclusion!

Presentation! Like any speech, eye contact and speaking with a clear voice is important. Be humble and don’t place yourself up by telling people how funny your joke is as their and your expectations are different! Get the timing of the joke correct and avoid swearing! If you are going to do accents then do them well otherwise, it just comes across as offensive!

Obviously, being a good stand up all comes down to you! Write down your ideas, practice hard and then get out there and perform! Experience is key to success in any field.

Dream big!

Well, there is one thing for sure, age is definitely no constraint for a great sense of humour! In another exclusive interview, www.iCUBED.us catch up with Connor Savage – Hong Kong Teenage stand up comic sensation – as he shares his experiences of performing in front of an adult audience.
