iCUBED.us: A stand up comedian? Shouldn't you be up to your eyeballs with homework at school?
CS: No not really, homework has never been an issue. It gets done! I mean I still do have something called parents!
iCUBED.us: How did you first get involved with stand up comedy?
CS: I used to watch “Just For Laughs” and then I just really wanted to try it so I tried it out.
iCUBED.us: Let me guess, at school, you are known as the 'joker'?
CS: Haha! No, not really! I mean when I was younger I was but not much anymore.
iCUBED.us: Why is laughing important? Can anyone learn stand up?
CS: Well yes, I believe anyone can learn to be a stand-up comedian? I mean it's not easy but once you learn it, it’s a lot of fun. It's important to laugh because I believe it's the only thing that keeps us sane and happy.
iCUBED.us: Is good humour cross-cultural? Do all Hong Kongers get your jokes?
CS: Not all Hong Kongers but at TakeOut Comedy we get all types of different cultures in the audience so it's interesting to see who laughs at what.
iCUBED.us: You must be the youngest stand-up comic in Hong Kong, if not Asia! Do you get recognized on the street?
CS: No, never gotten recognized but I have sort of a reputation amongst the other schools of being “that comedian kid.”
iCUBED.us: Who is your personal favourite stand up comic? And why?
CS: Probably Dane Cook or Robin Williams. Dane Cook because when I watched “Just For Laughs”, he was the comic that really stood out to me and that's kinda when I said that's what I wanna do. His humour is very raw, but funny. Robin Williams, because he is just so brilliant and quick thinking. He’s a really great inspiration for me, I think it's because of how talented he is and his style of comedy is just so great.
iCUBED.us: What do your jokes revolve around? Surely, given your age, some jokes are off limits?
CS: Oh ya, there are lots of things I personally can’t do or say on stage but for my age I try my best to push the limits as far as I can without going overboard. My jokes revolve around lots of things. I get inspiration from everything usually if I don’t like something I write a joke about it. I express myself through my comedy.
iCUBED.us: Be honest! How nervous were you for your first ever live performance?
CS: Haha, well my first performance was in Toronto, Canada during a talent show and I had gone over my set about a hundred times so to be honest I wasn’t nervous in my first show. It was when I started performing in Hong Kong that I got nervous.
iCUBED.us: Do you have a mentor to guide you through your comedy career? Is your age a hindrance in anyway?
CS: A mentor? Well Jami Gong the owner of TakeOut Comedy is someone I would consider a mentor. He’s been really supportive but so has everyone, but without him I would be nowhere. My age can be a hinderance sometimes. I mean like I said there are a lot of things I can’t say that other comics can because of their age, but other than that not really I’m pretty much treated the same as everyone else at the club.
iCUBED.us: So why did the chicken cross the road?
CS: Hmmm... well I would ask him myself but he never made it to the other side. He didn’t look both ways!
Thank you.
