"Music is a discipline, and a mistress of order and good manners, she makes the people milder and gentler, more moral and more reasonable." - Martin Luther
A majority of teens dream of becoming musicians! Playing an instrument is one of the best ways to express yourself! But how hard is it? Will singing in the shower or in front of a mirror with a hairbrush really make a difference? Will the endless hours of practice lead to greater things?
What are the sacrifices that have to be made before you can perform in front of crowds of thousands or even in front of ten people in a venue with bad lighting?
The term musician is very broad but it can be roughly summed up as a person who can play a single or multiple instruments (Well!). Musicians spend endless hours refining their craft and can play either independently or in orchestras, jazz bands or ensemble groups. Musicians can chose a whole host of instruments to excel in; these include brass, string, percussion or woodwind. Each individual tends to find an instrument which suits their style the best.
There are no real set steps to becoming a musician but everyone has to start somewhere!
PICK AN INSTRUMENT! Don’t just air guitar! Or play Guitar hero on the computer! Practice makes perfect and without the tools of the trade, you won’t even get to start! You don’t have to buy a Fender but purchasing an instrument of a decent standard will do! Ebay has thousands of second hand instruments for sale so check them out!
LEARN! People learn in different ways! Aside from practice, you will need to learn basic music theory; this will enable you to compose music, read musical pieces and conduct. If you need to enhance your technique then you can hire a tutor, attend a music school or even go onto YOUTUBE where thousands of people share their skills with the world!
PRACTICE! As the saying goes, practice makes perfect and the worlds best performers spend endless hours perfecting their craft! Superstar performers don’t just show up and perform, they have spent years refining ther skills. And of course, they have made many mistakes along the way! Discipline and persistance can go a long way!
PERFORM! Once you are up to a decent standard then you should perform! Either in front of friends and family, in smaller venues or as an audition; no one will spot your talent unless you actually give them a chance to see your talent! You will also be able to receive feedback and improve!
CHARACTER TRAITS! To become a professional musician, a person must at least be creative, disciplined, hardworking, have presence and be in good shape. Why fit? Because performing can be both physically and mentally exhausting!
But the important question remains! Does it pay (literally) to be a musician! Unless you are the Rolling Stones or U2, does being a musician mean you will be catergorized as a staving artist forever!
Dream big! Practice hard and who knows where you might up end performing!
