"U.N. Year of BIODIVERSITY in the HOUSE!"
by nycScribbler, 26 October 2010
In the spirit of Halloween, a special “HALLOGREEN COSTUME AWARD” is being offered for the top five best costumes, preferably made with ECO-friendly materials. Participants are encouraged to take a photo, in costume at the Mai Po Nature Reserve and email it to walk@wwf.org.hk by Nov 15... Prizes will be awarded to the top five winners. Please refrain from wearing bright colors or shiny materials to avoid disturbing the birds.
Kick off this Halloween by supporting nature’s biodiversity. The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) is hosting their annual fund-raising and outreach event by taking a walk through Hong Kong’s Mai Po Nature Reserve – a wetland conservation site.
Since the United Nations has declared 2010 to be the International Year of Biodiversity, it’s only fitting that the theme for this year’s WWF annual NATUREwalk is “Biodiversity – Let’s Live in Harmony with Nature.”
So what is biodiversity?
According to the United Nations Environment Program, “Biodiversity is the variety of life on earth, it includes all organisms, species, and populations; the genetic variation among these; and their complex assemblages of communities and ecosystems.”
Participants will walk through the park following a designated route, which will give special access to areas of the park that are normally closed. The route is about 5km long and will take three hours to complete. All funds raised will go to the WWF's conservation and education programs. If you missed registering for this year's NATUREwalk, mark your calendars and sign up next year!
For access to the wetland park, the following minimum donations are required:
•Teens under-18 or full time students must make a minimum donation of HK$300;
•Adults age-18 or older must make a minimum donation of HK$500;
•Parents with two children below age-18 must make a minimum donation of HK $1500
While you walk through the park, keep in mind that the choices you make every day leave behind an ECO-footprint. THINK about and BE AWARE of ways you can protect nature’s biodiversity.
