Adopt a mindset of REDUCE, REUSE, and RECYCLE, today!
Challenge yourself to look at rubbish and see what valuable resources you're tossing out... the big multinational companies are ALL doing it already, and not a moment too soon! Landfills are toxic due to the unknown melange of synthetic materials we humans toss out, much of which is reusable.
The largest footware makers, softdrink companies, electronic and tech companies are all beginning to collect their used products for the raw materials with which to make new product lines. We have to be more ambitious with our recycling initiatives, and the FIRST STEP is a RADICAL CHANGE IN MINDSET where there is NO SUCH THING AS WASTE -- like in nature where all is in a perpetual cycle of life.
Car companies are looking at ways to use non-toxic biodegradable plant by-products instead of petroleum by-products for their plastic parts. Why not? If they are durable, renewable, and able to break down in, and without polluting nature.
The race is on!
If you're studying the sciences, you might get to work in these exciting new R&D Departments of multi-national companies, dreaming, imagining, and creating A FUTURE WITHOUT WASTE...
*Did you know that humans are the ONLY creature to create extra-bodily waste? Think about THAT!

I've been composting my
I've been composting my kitchen scraps for a few months now here in Hong Kong, and in doing this I'm learning so much about HOW this happens...
I started with small packet placed inside my balcony's window boxes. When those stared sprouting... I moved a large swaeter box onto the balcony and used that as my pile...
I mean, first I read about it, after seeing how friends do it, but the thing that got me to take it on, was when I read about how soil is not just "dirt"... That soil is a living thing!
I'd been thinking about getting a pet, but wasn't sure I could deal with all the needs of a pet, so this compost is my connection to a living system, the compost is my pet...
If anyone wants to do this, feel free to write me anything... I don't know it all, but wouldn't mind sharing what I know

Massive fly infestation, then tiny crawling insects
If you're composting kitchen waste either cover up your compost with a layer of soil, or some shredded newspaper, to keep the moisture level inside from breeding flies. Lotsa flies!
Case in point--At one point I ran out of soil, and my pile started smelling kinda nasty like rotting soggy veg. And, a biblical swarm of flies literally ascended like a dark cloud when I open the lid! HORRORS.
All i could do was to I look up the life span of a fly, which is from 2-6 weeks... Thankfully, not that long. Knowing that the stinking wet pile of rotting veg had unborn flies yet to hatch, and still not having fresh soil to cover up the pile, I opted for a generous layer of shredded newspaper as cover before putting the lid back on the container. As expected, another batch of flies hatched and flew around inside for a few weeks, then all was calm again, and I could open the lid without releasing yet another swarm of buzzing vermin! Then covering up with a bag of soil, I was ready for my next Adventure in Composting!
AGAIN, ran out of soil to cover kitchen cuttings.
This time it wasn't as wet in there, so no flies, but after a few weeks, everything was crawling with the tiniest bugs, like the whole pile was crawling! Yah! Itchy. So, read up about it, and should be fine. The thing to beware is mold. Mold = not good. Critters = good, cause at least the pile sustains life. :)
Oh, and it never worried me that the tiny bugs would crawl out of the big compost box, because, why would they do THAT!? ... that's like leaving an all you can eat buffet to wander around around in a desert!
