If you’ve ever wondered why even ultra rational British bankers in Hong Kong pay in the millions for Fung Shui Masters to consult on their interiors, or even if you think that fortunetellers are hokey snake-oil salesmen, this program gives you an insight into how psychic visions work.
Then it’s up to you whether to believe or not…
Patricia Arquette (winner of 2005 Emmy Award for Best Actress in TV Series) is Allison DuBois, a real live psychic working with law enforcement to reveal the true circumstances of criminal cases. Most of the time, Allison gets her messages from her visions - a la M. Night Shymalan’s, THE SIXTH SENSE (1999) - “I see dead people” - and from vivid dreams that even she finds difficult to decipher.
According to this program, which takes its stories from real but disguised cases worked on by the real Allison Dubois, there are people with extra sensitivities that can access images and energies that the majority of us cannot. They not only “see” dead people, dead people tell them things about the future and the past.
SPOOOOOOOOOOKY, right!?!
To some this type of ability is a gift, to others it’s a curse.
Can you imagine waking up and having a room full of dead people asking you if you’re alright?
Or, walking down a corridor in a hospital and being SURROUNDED by ghosts calmouring for your attention?!
While on the subject of ghosts, another one of my all time FAVORITES is a beautiful movie about the Power-of-Love that won Whoopie Goldberg a Best-Supporting Actress Oscar in the role of a “shocked-to-be-really-PSYCHIC scam artist”, the side-splittingly funny GHOST (1986), starring Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore.
In Allison Dubois’ case, and perhaps because she turns it to good use, it is a gift. And she is able to help solve, if not exactly to prevent, crimes ……….think, pre-cogs in Steven Speilberg’s 2002 hit movie, MINORITY REPORT, starring Tom Cruise.
It seems that the real Allison Dubois wants people to understand her gift and to see that not all “Psychics” are attention seeking phoneys, and Season-One of this psychological thriller is an eye openner, both in the stories it tells, and in its suspicious not altogether believable attempt to “explain” some more serious problems, such as people who hear voices in their heads. The implication is that these people are actually “hearing” the muted voices of spirits of the dead, which acccording to the program, if they pay attention, they can - as with any other SKILL - “learn” to get better at hearing.
For my younger readers, saying that this series is produced by the creators of MOONLIGHTING ( a hit US TV series starring - once again - Bruce Willis, who’s surprisingly been mentioned in this blog for the third time already! ) will mean less than saying that it is executive produced by Kelsey Grammer - TV’s Grade-A pompous, but endearing radio show psychaiatrist - Dr. FRASIER Crane.
It was difficult deciding whether or not to write about this particular TV Series as it does border on superstition and The Occult. And I want to make clear that I am not suggesting either that you believe or disbelieve that there might be people who do possess ‘abilities’ that we individually might not.
BUT, in my opinion, with which you are welcome to disagree, I think we should REALLY listen to what “OTHER” people have to say before we shut them down and pass judgement on them wholesale.
If you decide to check this out, remember to keep an open, but also, a SKEPTICAL mind - DON’T believe everything people tell you, or that you see on TV, in the MOVIES and even in print.
Being OPEN and SKEPTICAL are really two side of the same coin… and it really is just as, or even more important to LEARN HOW TO THINK analytically, as it is to memorize facts.
That’s just my two cents. Add yours to the fray…

[ WARNING: This program can contain some pretty eeerie notions, and I was left sleepless for three nights after one psychologically gruesome episode. (MEDIUM - Season-One has been released in a boxed set) ]
