CARS (2006) is a high octane film for boys, young and old - and, indeed, for anyone living life in the fast lane.
Lightening McQueen is a little rookie race car intent on making history by being the youngest race-car rookie ever to win the prestigious Piston Cup.
The dream of fame and fortune has Lightening making all sorts of bad decisions both professionally and personally.
He’s immature, he’s obnoxious and one-dimensional, convinced that money and fame will deliver everything.
His only “friend” is his agent/employee, and at the rate he’s going, it’s clear that even if, or WHEN, Lightening does end up with all that he thinks he deserves for being a CHAMPION, he will find himself empty and alone because all that he will be surrounded by would have been “bought-and-paid-for”. All of his “possessions” mere transactions. He will have nothing that transcends the material world. Nothing that is meaningful or that is worth treasuring. Nothing that cannot be bought, like Trust, loyalty and real friendship.
But how does a rookie race-car learn life’s great lessons?
In this film the CARS speak, they have personalities and some pretty over-the-top foreign accents, and they represent a little of the cultural diversity in America today.
In this busy modern world, we need more reminders that, “Life is a journey, Enjoy the trip.”
And CARS does a wonderful job bringing home this ageless message.
TWO THUMBS UP!
Go see this film for the a-mile-a-minute, gravel-flying race circuit scenes, a little Disney-esque romance, and a much needed message that …..”Winning ISN’T everything!”
