Healthy living is defined as:
- Eating five servings of a variety of fruits and vegetable, and exercising for 30 minutes a day
- Not drinking more than 7 glasses of alcohol a week
- NOT SMOKING
The research was done by tracking the lifestyles and habits of 20,000 people aged 45 to 79 over a period of thirteen years in Norfolk England.
The Public Library of Science Medicine study suggests that people can increase their lifespan through simple changes.
The research was carried out by Cambridge University and the Medical Research Council between 1993 and 2006, and was valid even for those who are overweight. Suggesting that the important thing is daily habits, not perceived fitness.
Lead researcher, Professor Kay-Tee Khaw, said, "And we also found that social class and BMI - body mass index - really did not have a role to play. It means a large proportion of the population really could feel health benefits through moderate changes."
