The Fulbright Program, started by U.S. Senator J. William Fulbright, provides funds to help students, scholars and professionals study abroad. The aim of this is to help promote peace and understanding through educational exchange. With the program reaching 144 countries around the world, the Fulbright Program is considered one of the most prestigious award programs.
It was started shortly after World War II in an effort to promote peace and draw the world back together in unity through understanding. It is open to students, scholars and professionals of all ages looking to study abroad and gain a better understanding of foreign nations as well as further their education. The program provides funds and grants for those accepted in the hopes of building a better global environment.
In 1993, the J. William Fulbright Prize for International Understanding was started by the Fulbright Association and is awarded to those who have made extraordinary contributions toward bringing peoples, cultures, or nations to a greater understanding of each other. Former Recipients include Nelson Mandela (1993) and former U.S. President Bill Clinton (2005).
