ANOTHER DAY
The best thing about my mother is
her gentle tapping of my door
to wake me up for school.
The best thing about my mother is
The aroma of toast and coffee
Wafting through the gap under my door
Telling me to wake up once again.
The best thing about my mother is
How adept she is at
Pulling down my covers
Freezing my exposed tummy
as my feet bask in the glory of the sun.
The best thing about my mother is
That handy little bell she hangs
Just outside my door,
So that she could ring it and wake me
For the fourth time.
The best thing about my mother is
That final effort of blasting music
That she thinks is ‘hip’ and ‘cool’
Such as Blink 182 and Usher.
Just to wake me up for school
That is to begin in 20 minutes.
The best thing about my mother is
Her desperate scream
That eventually leads me to jump up,
And into the shower.
“You’re going to miss school!”
The best thing about my mother is
that waxy sweetness of her lipstick
when she kisses me,
bidding me goodbye
to start yet another day.
