"DOES PUNISHMENT WORK?"
(A Contest in Video, Collage, Cartoon, Photo or Essay format)
Lock ‘em up and throw away the key... or worse?
Take a look at these figures: For the first time in U.S. history, more than one of every 100 adults is in jail or prison, according to a recent report from the Pew Center on the States. America, considered the world’s sole superpower, is also the globe’s No. 1 incarcerator. China executes more people each year than any other country in the world. Capital punishment is used for crimes ranging from murder to tax evasion to corruption. China’s overall crime rate, though low, is increasing. The U.S. crime rate, not including drug violations, is decreasing.
What do these statistics say about law and order in two of the largest, most powerful countries in the world? Do we need a heavy hand in today’s society? Or is it time to rethink what is illegal, such as prostitution and marijuana possession? Tell us what you think about crime and punishment.
