iCUBED.us is so WORD-centric, so when our friend SandraY sent this to me, I HAD to put it up... it's at least a nod in the direction of math, sums and accounts
Thanks as always to Sandra...

... especially this year, as the news arrived yesterday from the general direction of the North Pole, that 200 reindeer drowned when their herd of 3,000 ended up in the freezing water when they were marching across a frozen lake, which turned out to be NOT frozen enough, instead cracking beneath the weight of the reindeer herd.
PROOF once again of Global Warming & Climate Change...

| HAPPY DIWALI - The Festival of Light |
|
|
|
19 October 2009
Living in Asia has become a much more multicultural experience for many, myself included.
I say this because in recent years I get many reminders from friends and even the media, when major festivals such as RAMADAN, the Muslim month of fasting (for similar purposes as Catholics observe Lent), or in today's case, the Hindu festival of lights - DIWALI FESTIVAL rolls around.

30 September 2009
There's been so many 'natural disasters' these days it takes such a toil on our sense of compassion, there's so much need out there, and this barrage of destruction makes us all the more grateful for the peace that remains in the world, but also it must make us wonder how we might make a difference to lessen the suffering in the world by our own acts and actions.
Is it enough, for example, to donate to relief?
Is it helpful for us to learn more about root causes of these calamities?
Is there a way to reverse things like 'climate change'?

| Hong Kong Journalists and Foreign Correspondents to unite in Protest for Beating of Journalists |
|
|
|
12 September 2009, Saturday
This town's abuzz, there's talk about tomorrow's march in protest for the beating of Hong Kong journalists covering the reports of syringe attacks in Urumuqi, Xinjiang last week. A loud voiced elderly man was seen chanting slogans in Cantonese today as he walked down a main street in Central District. "We must protest the beating of our journalists! JOIN THE MARCH!" he said.
And so it remains to be seen how this act of civic responsibility will play out tomorrow, and whether there will be remedial actions to better the situation.

| WORDS - & a story - TO LIVE BY ... from one fiesty Grand Dame |
|
|
By Regina Brett, 90 years old, of The Plain Dealer, Cleveland, Ohio
"To celebrate growing older, I once wrote the 45 lessons life taught me. It is the most-requested column I've ever written."
My odometer rolled over to 90 in August, so here is the column once more:
1. Life isn't fair, but it's still good.
2. When in doubt, just take the next small step.
3. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone...

2 June 2009
We've been unusually quiet these days, and with the successful launch of our Anthology this past weekend, we have real cause to CELEBRATE! and, certainly no celebration is complete without a period of rest, and also, of reassessment. So that is just what we are doing... in our unique way... and by giving thanks.

I'll bet many of our readers know what stress is, especially this time of year!
EXAMS are coming up for many of you... and you'll be under house arrest, locked up with stacks of revision books, cut off from the outside world.
So how do you handle stress?

Dr. Judith Mackay has had a good year. She started this year by having the letters behind her name 'upgraded' from OBE to MBE.
Tomorrow, Dr. Mackay will be giving a speech at the Hong Kong University, about her award from the British Medical Journal, for Lifetime Achievement for her 20-over years of campaigning against tobacco and smoking! Now, finally many more people are being motivated to stop the madness that is cigarette smoking addiction... and not a moment too soon!

Today I finally learned how to swim ~ it wasn't by any stretch of the imagination something that came easy to me, this being my third attempt to learn to master the technique of coordinating all the movements with my breathing, and managing to propel myself through the water at a decent pace... BUT like riding a bike, learning to swim is just one of those things that, once learned, is never forgotten.

.
I have to take this opportunity to thank some of the invisible people that insure the smooth operation of this web portal, especially our webmaster T.Y., who took time off this holiday season, but still made sure that our content was updated daily.
T.Y. deserves a lot of credit not only for her dedication to iCUBED.us' mission - to empower youth to be engaged global citizens, but also for her mostly sunny disposition.

GANESH - the Lord of Beginnings and the Remover of Obstacles
In our world of easy imitation, is there any value in being An Original?
Some say that imitation is the most sincere form of flattery. But I'd almost say, "I prefer my flattery more directly delivered" : ) (something like - "That's a great idea, I think I'll try it too")

Finally back in Hong Kong, feet firmly on the ground.
We will be featuring many an episodic story of this trip which took me to the -still- United Kingdom, where "we" visited the fantastically tongue-in-cheek NEW ART FROM CHINA exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery in Chelsea, and amongst other highlights of discovery, came face-to-face with British actor Jude Law and his two children in a restaurant called Giraffe, and the highlight of all highlights, toured CHARTWELL the favorite country home of my personal hero, Sir Winston Churchill.

There are very few things in life more beautiful than a lit candle.
It's somehow calming to watch the irregular dance of the flame, as if all troubles melt, evaporating away as the wax tapers off into nothingness. There's logic and there's a conclusion that feels satisfying. It's about knowing where you're going, knowing your destination. Once you know your destination, it's easy to enjoy the journey...
