| ValerieW-17 on "Why I Can’t Stop Reading Diary of a Wimpy Kid" |
|
|
|
by ValerieW-17, 25 January 2010
Just for the record, I would like to state that I have never been a fan of neither children nor children’s literature. I am known to cringe in the mere presence of kids---I’m sure you can imagine what happens when the inevitable screaming and/or crying begins. Reading The Little Prince for my French class last year was a painful experience due to its lack of resonance with me (I’m sure the fact hat it was written in French didn’t help either!) Despite all this, however, I still consider Diary of a Wimpy Kid one of my favourite book series.

by KavidhaN-20, 3 December 2009
IS TWILIGHT, WORTH THE HYPE?
Everyone seems to have an opinion about TWILIGHT these days.
From Miley Cyrus to Adam Lambert, even Robert Pattinson, and my next door neighbor; people are either for, or against it. It has caught on like wildfire and the question I have is… does it really live up to its hype?

RESONANCE
IN my last blog, I wrote about the importance of "Readability", today, I'd like to continue on a similar theme...
If readability is the x-factor of good writing, resonance is its equally important--if even more enigmatic--twin sibling.

READABILITY
As a result of all my years of reading experience, I’ve come to truly appreciate a certain quality of literature that I shall, for the lack of a better word, coin as “readability”.

THE iCUBED.us ANTHOLOGY "I'm a smarty pants" CHALLENGE

Which is why, iCUBED.us is giving a special prize for any & everyone (aged 13 to 21) who catches "any 10 bona-fide grammar mistakes" of the many we purposefully left in the text of the Anthology.
But you must:
1.) catch the mistakes,

|

|
by ValerieW-16, 16 February 2009
As a person who practically sleeps with her iPod, Audrey, Wait! was automatically an awesome read just for the rock lyrics that were scattered throughout. Among the highlights were little gems such as “you can always see it comin’, but you can never stop it” (Cowboy Junkies, “Bea’s Song”) and “amazed to stumble where gods get lost” (Patti Smith, “Beneath the Southern Cross”) that just happen to relate to what’s happening in the plot. Is that awesome or what?

And why the changing habits of devoted readers are the cause

by nycScribbler, 14 January 2009
The book publishing and book selling industries are faltering, thanks to a new era of online book-buying. Publishers such as Houghton Mifflin and Harcourt are cutting back and laying off. Harcourt recently announced that they won’t be acquiring any new manuscripts. What? Has the world gone totally mad?

| ANIMAL FARM: IS EQUALITY ALL THAT? |
|
|
|
by Nomadic Chris, 7 November 2008
"All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others” - Animal Farm
Is this statement true? Does the concept of equality in a democracy truly exist? Democracies now experience polarization between the rich and poor. Russia and India are experiencing these social issues. Does a disabled person have an equal chance of success compared to an able bodied person? Is the color of your skin still a factor? Can the ideals of equality still be applicable in these circumstances? Is equality all that?

|
|
|

by ValerieW-16, 3 November 2008
The other day in my IB English class, we were discussing the dreaded world literature essay, which is a major component of our final grades, and a rather difficult-sounding one too. Naturally, all of the students began to moan and groan. “Why can’t we just study something easy, like Harry Potter?” asked an anonymous guy.
