|
by RonF, 12 October 2009
Of all the university degrees in the world, I had to choose philosophy…
In retrospect, I must admit, it was not well thought out, so I guess you could say that it was a bit of a whim — there are times now when I feel that I should have listened to my parents and friends and gone for a practical, “money-magnet” course like law or finance - after all, at the end of the day, money and position do matter in life.

There are a few professions that are considered "noble" because those who enter their ranks do so not because of thoughts of personal gain but rather because they believe in what good they are doing; professions like journalism or policemen and firemen where one stands to risk life and limb. And possibly the dedication includes the excitement and thrill of the job.

| Defining Success "Why keep our standards high" |
|
|
|
by !Baha, 24 August 2009
With school about to start, it seems appropriate to think about how we choose to define success. Is it getting high grades, is it doing well on exams, does it matter whether one cheats to get the higher grades ? iCUBED.us would like to present two articles for our readers to reflect on in helping you to think about this most important concept of how we define success for ourselves as we go through our years in school earning a degree or preparing to make a living.

Before you ask, yes, there were cockroaches. Many cockroaches. However, the fact that these incidents paled in comparison to the rest of my Columbia experience is indicative of just how awesome the past three weeks have been.

Should work just be about the money? Doesn't aptitude and affinity matter? After all, how much time do we spend at work in our daily lives? Doesn't it seem wise to work at something you enjoy? So think about it, what do you enjoy doing and why?

| SCHOOL CHILDREN IN INDIA LEARN ABOUT WITCHCRAFT AS PART OF THEIR CURRICULUM IN AN EFFORT TO DISPEL SUPERSTITIONS |
|
|
|

by nycScribbler, 1 December 2008
Since 2003, it is estimated that about 750 people, mostly old women, have been killed in witch hunts in rural India. One of the worst examples of this is when a family of four was stoned and buried alive for supposedly cursing a relative of the village chief.
Among tribal communities in India, many believe in the existence of witches and their ability to harm people, animals and harvests.

How a handful of U.S. schools are making it possible

Many of you have probably never heard of tuition-free colleges, but in the United States there are several to choose from, although at some you must be willing to work for your education.
Some of these institutions have been around for a near century, and some lucky students (and parents) are taking advantage of these schools, many of which are specialized institutions.

The study collected 407 survey responses from parents and 407 responses from teenagers.

Response to Cambridge University: Social justice not our role
http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2008/09/10/europe/EU-Britain-Cambridge.ph...
In the United Kingdom, the class system, regardless if you like it or not is still in place.
This elitism extends to all areas of society including education. From hearing the news, it does seem that some of the United Kingdom's finest academic institutions wish to maintain a certain degree of elitism in what many in the UK deem "class warfare."

| DaisyC-17 asks, "Should Mothers in Hong Kong Stay at Home to Raise the Kids?" |
|
|
|
by DaisyC-17, 19 September 2008
Should mothers be given freedom to develop their careers, and should fathers also shoulder the responsibilities of taking care of their children?
Nowadays, women are educated and thus more independent financially. They no longer need to rely on their husbands for money and many are capable and want to have their own careers outside the home, maybe in part because they hope to promote women’s social status.
It is definitely a wasted human resources if mothers are expected to not work.

by newsgal-17, 23 August 2008
Used to be that getting into a top tier university meant more than just getting exceptional grades… It also meant parents had to save every penny from the time we were born until graduation day (and we’re not talking about high school or secondary school graduation either).

| RobB-17, about SUMMER CAMP AT CARLETON U |
|
|
|
By RobB-17, 14 August 2008
“Impress Mackie.”
Those were the last words of comfort I was offered before I set off for day one at Carleton University’s soccer camp.
Carleton had been picked after serious consideration ahead of other renowned and prestigious footballing universities, namely UBC & SFU in Vancouver, York and Western in Toronto, and even Queen’s in Kingston. Carleton was probably the only school I was considering solely for footballing purposes; they were the number one ranked team in both province and country, led by this Mackie fellow.

| Prof. of Virtual Reality at Carnegie Mellon University, RANDY PAUSCH 's "Last Lecture" |
|
|
|
by Margaret Chen, 26 July 2008
Professor Randy Pausch, aged 47, who was a tenured professor at Carnegie Mellon University in the U.S. succumbed to advanced pancreatic cancer yesterday at his home. May he rest in peace.
Besides having fulfilled nearly all of his childhood dreams, Prof. Pausch had some words of wisdom to share with his students and fellow professors about "living well versus living long". He was a professor who not only dared to dream, he was also - as he tells it, not one to be easily defeated, soldiering on by being earnest and honest and by always working hard...

| BrendaL-18 on THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING BI- or TRI LINGUAL |

by BrendaL-18, 18 July 2008
Recently, I was told the following joke: “If you speak three languages, you are trilingual. If you speak two languages, you are bilingual. If you speak one language, you are American.”
Rude undertones aside, the truth of the joke is pretty glaring. In fact, when I heard the joke, I felt slightly ashamed of myself.

| Mystery-writer on GRADUATION and the Places You’ll Go… |
|
|
|
by Mystery-writer, 12 June 2008
For the last time you’ve heard the bell ringing in your homeroom class.
The door closes for the last time on your way out of the classroom. You hand in your last term paper, or finish your honour’s thesis.
For one and all, the last time these things happen indicates it’s time to graduate. Whether you’re finishing high school, college or university, it’s that time of year. Some of you are counting down the days to graduation, hoping it hurries up so you can be done with what seems like the never-ending semester or term.
